Rodge is a bad man. You could do worse than to seek his advice.

Unfortunately, you'll have to suffer through mine for the the moment.

If you have not already done so, seek out solo efforts by Brice Wassy,Karim Ziad, Tony Allen, and Mokhtar Samba. Then go back and check out their influences.

Just dig into the music. There's a lot of useful information there.

The book you speak of may be Mokhtar's. Dan Thress was selling it, if memory serves correctly.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hey Elpatricio and Riddim, thanks for puting my name about African drumming.
But really I think that I suck in these kind of groove, but yeah Mokhtar Samba's book is the real deal !!!
And you have to listen :

- Nguy?n L? "Maghreb And Friends" with Karim Ziad (Mokthar plays one song too, and what a song !!!)
- Karim Ziad's "Chabiba"
- Mokthar Samba's "Dounia"
- Salif Keita's "Soro" & "Amen" (Brice Wassy and Paco Sery on drums)
- Ultramarine "D?" & "? Si Mala" (Mokhtar Samba)
- Jean-Luc Ponty's "Tchocolat" (Brice Wassy on drums)
- And yes, Fela Kuti with the great Tony Allen on drums...

Have fun Guys !!!

Peace.

Yeah man Tony Allen is some cat! I saw his band at the Africajarc festival last year, what a cool sound they had! His persona reminded me of elvin jones somehow, just totally the energy source of the band, but letting all his other players shine.

Will Kennedy took a kind of lesson with Mokhtar after that his ass has been kicked by Mokhtar and Ultramarine some years ago...
But kicked in a good spirit of course, they are good friends since.

All right.

Hi all! I saw Tony Allen at The North Sea Jazz Festival a few years ago, although I've forgotten who he was playing with. He was amazing and such a feel, that music is infectious.

Rodge, you're so humble! Hey, maybe this is the right topic to ask you to re-post that fast track that I asked you about a while ago, that you played on. Satayagra (??) - Guys you HAVE to hear this track, it's so musical and Rodges' playing is RIDICULOUS!

Go on Rodge............

I was first exposed to both Wassy & Moktar on their collective Jean Luc Ponty discs.

Side-note: Coming from a jazz background, Will Kennedy was starting to get more into Afro beats/grooves of late...i really dug some of the fuso-afro-latiny-jazz grooves he came up with in select Yellowjackets tunes ["Capetown" off Blue Hats being one...an inverted "afro'ish - shuffle" in 6/8]...

Each awesome, groovalicious drummers.
